Detection of Lyman-α emission from a DLA galaxy: Possible implications for a luminosity-metallicity

چکیده
In an ongoing programme to identify a sample of high z DLA galaxies we have found the long sought for case of a Lyα emitter seen in the centre of a broad DLA trough. This is the predicted “textbook case” of an intervening DLA galaxy if DLA galaxies are small, but would not be expected if intervening high redshift DLA galaxies have large gaseous disks. The Lyα flux is 5.4 −0.8 × 10 ergs scm similar to what has been found in previously known high z DLA galaxies. The impact parameter is found to be 0. ′′3±0. ′′3. This is smaller than what was found in previous cases but still consistent with random sightlines through absorbers with mean impact parameter ≈ 1′′. Of the 24 DLAs targeted in the NICMOS imaging survey five have now been identified as Lyα emitters. The DLA galaxies with detected Lyα emission tend to have higher interstellar metallicities than those with undetected Lyα emission. This is plausibly explained as a consequence of a positive correlation between the Lyα line luminosities of the galaxies and their metallicities, although the present sample is too small for a definitive conclusion. The available observations of high-redshift DLA galaxies are also consistent with a negative correlation between Lyα equivalent widths and metallicities, as seen in nearby star-forming galaxies and usually attributed to the preferential absorption of Lyα photons by dust grains.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of Extended Ly α Emission from the DLA Galaxy in Q 2233 + 131
This paper presents observations of an extended Lyman-α emission nebula surrounding the galaxy responsible for the Damped Lyman-α Absorption (DLA) line in the spectrum of the quasar Q2233+131. With the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) we measure the properties of the extended Lyα emission in an area of 3×5 having a total line flux of (2.8± 0.3)× 10 erg cm s, which at redshift z =...
متن کاملVelocity - metallicity correlation for high - z DLA galaxies : Evidence for a mass - metallicity relation ? ⋆
We used our database of VLT-UVES quasar spectra to build up a sample of 70 Damped Lyman-α (DLA) or strong sub-DLA systems with total neutral hydrogen column densities of log N(H ) > ∼ 20 and redshifts in the range 1.7 < z abs < 4.3. For each of the systems, we measured in an homogeneous manner the metallicities relative to Solar, [X/H] (with X = Zn, or S or Si), and the velocity widths of low-...

We used our database of ESO VLT-UVES spectra of quasars to build up a sample of 67 Damped Lyman-α (DLA) systems with redshifts 1.7 < zabs < 3.7. For each system, we measured average metallicities relative to Solar, [X/H] (with either X = Zn, S or Si), and the velocity widths of low-ionization line profiles, W1. We find that there is a tight correlation between the two quantities, detected at th...
متن کاملExtended Ly α emission from a damped Ly α absorber at z = 1 . 93 , and the relation between DLAs and Lyman - break galaxies
The number of damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) currently known is about 100, but our knowledge of their sizes and morphologies is still very sparse as very few have been detected in emission. Here we present narrow–band and broad–band observations of a DLA in the field of the quasar pair Q0151+048A (qA) and Q0151+048B (qB). These two quasars have very similar redshifts zem=1.922, 1.937, respectively...

We image 19 quasars with 22 damped Lyman α (DLA) systems using the F160W filter and the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, in both direct and coronagraphic modes. We reach 5σ detection limits of ∼H=22 in the majority of our images. We compare our observations to the observed Lyman-break population of high-redshift galaxies, as well as Bruzual & ...
